A LIGHT IN THE FIELD

O

The boy stood alone in the dark, barely
a silhouette, easy to mistake for another reedy stack, standing gangly in the midst of a still, fallow field, on a sweaty night, somewhere way out in the outskirts.

Cicadas, mosquitos, an owl, and the boy.

“How did you get out here, son?” spoke the voice, from deep in the dark, shattering the calm.

The jolt, unexpected as summer lightning, struck the boy like a bolt up his anus, his spine, a hot conduit for the roar of the shock that exploded in his head. Panic. He imagined he burst out of his skin, but, nonetheless, was ready to hit the ground running when he came down, even if it meant leaving his skin behind in order to save his ass.

“Don’t move.” The growl spoke. And the boy did his best while his head was still in the air, could not feel the ground beneath his feet, and hoping his heart would start to beat once again, and gravity did not count as motion

“I do mean, ‘don’t move’, understand?”
“Ya…yes…yes…”

“I would be suspicious of this circumstance and suspect you might be trying to catch a glimpse of my daughter. Would I be justified?”

“NO! what ?… no!” the boy’s heart rate, newly jolted, was now racing. “I wouldn’t…”

“I …would!...normally be highly suspicious, to be honest with you. But, if you are some peeping tom, come creeping around my daughter, why the hell are you so far away?”

“Sir?”

“First of all, from what I see, and I have been watching you from right nearby, I am secure in knowing that, although you may see the light from yon window, you are one hell of a ways away to see anything else, so why put yourself in harms way over a girl you can’t even see?

“Sir?”

“If you got closer, you might catch a glimpse, but if you did that, and got caught, hot prods would be scorching throught your eye orbs as we speak, and you’d be that much closer to the shed and ready for slaughter.”

I’m  not! I’m looking for my dog….’RUSTY!’…she took off! and she’s in heat!…My mom’s upset…so I’m out looking

“Out here…”
“I had to pee.”

“There had better not be a pecker hangin out of those jeans, because if you’re touchin’ yourself within a mile of daughter your fate is sealed.”

“I’m not! Hands up…zipper up! Look! Nothing out! I swear!”

“You do this often?…come out here? This a regular thing with you?”

“No sir…the dog…”

“How’d you get out here?”

“My bike. Over by the road…”

“And you walked clear out here…”

“ the dog…”

The man gave a shrill whistle through his fingertips, the sound pierced the night and faded off over the flat distance. They waited for a bark, the boy knew was never coming. The man repeated the whistle, with a vibrato that spoke to canines, but not this time.
They stood silent now.

“Sir I really got to pee…”

“Pee. Go ahead. But have some respect and turn your back to my home.”

“Yes sir.” As the boy relieved himself in the moonlight, the sound of his stream hard and steady, and steam rose from his pool on the soil.

The voice asked, “Do you know my daughter, boy?”

“No sir.”

“What’s your name then?”

“Why? Why is that needed when I don’t know her, and she don’t know me?”

“First of all it’s important to me, as her old man, and as for the rest of it, we’ll just wait and see…ideally, Legally, but not necessarily…”

“I got to go…my Mom. I never done this sir….”

“I can see that son, but here’s my concern – you’re caught, you’re scared,  I cut you lose, you’re wounded, but you wait, and think about it, and keep thinking about it, and find you just can’t stay away. On that night, I might not be out taking my walk on a sticky night like this one, so you get a little closer to that light over there...drawn to that light because what’s in there is magic…the genie glowing inside the bottle and you just gotta see for yourself. So each time you return you get a little closer, just hoping for that magic glimpse. Closer...closer...And then what? Entry?

What?!

You may have the struggling urges and a budding fertility going to war within your body, but tonight you’re a kid on a bike, and she’s a girl in her jammies, so that’s where you are. You know her, and she knows you. The time may come, son, you never know…when we just might meet. I can’t see your face, but I know who you are. Will you know me?”

“I will, sir,” The boy said shuffling backwards.

“Go get on your bike and go home. Kiss your Mother on the cheek and take a cold shower.”

"Yes sir. Sorry to disturb you."

"Try not to ‘disturb yourself’ so much"

"Yes sir!" he repeated, as he retreated into the night.

"And, boy?! Next time you come, there will be dogs."

VOIDED

         Vacuum

He opened the file
and there it sat
On an empty page,
a singular word perched
in limbo :

         'vacuum'

Floating …
Upper-left top
Of an otherwise
blank screen,
a thought, but

    Oddly incomplete

He doubted it was his.

Yet no doubt it was.

It had to be!

If not...

Who else could have?

What's it mean?
....Drawing a blank?
.......Feeling drained?
..........an emptiness, perhaps.

It was a beginning and an end
With nothing in-between

What does it mean?
What does one do with it?

Whose words?
Whose brain?
Whose revery?
Was so vaccumous
As to suck us into
Filling the void
or had the word, itself,
true it's meaning
drained the page
of it's intended
content
only
to leave us
vacant and
wondering?

Will mysteries never cease?

THE SEARING

The cloak

Donned at two
The eternal shroud
Sheltering
The Hallowed cloud
Seduced
by the muse
in the darkness,
we trust.
In darkness
we lust
In darkness
we draw
Darker outlines
and flaws
Hidden
by day
Heightened
by night
In darkness
we saw,
a darkness
too bright

THE LINE

( Drinking with Skunk )

The line of those willing to take credit for your labors is a long one. And twice as insincere. Never make it look too easy, otherwise they think it is. Pretty soon, they think, well hell, anyone can do this shit. That’s the end. Diving on your own petard. ( bang ).
Can’t blame them. Life is hard enough, and you’re lucky to be where you are, if you’re safe and loved, it’s not a bad place to be, really….but then you got to hang on to it. There are things you are responsible for. What if you fuck up? Then what?  I mean…Who is it …sticks out their neck? Who just does it ?…. without question, choice, or a thought. Find them, follow them, stay close unless there’s trouble. If there’s trouble drop back, less there be shrapnel. But if you sense victory, get in tight enough to shake the hands and take the pats. All along, just be aware of those that would step over your bones to feel the glow. So…?  Fuck it. The past is the past. Those games have been played. The efforts long ago exerted, quietly dissipated like the sweat it took to accomplish… accepting 'forgetting', if not 'forgiving'. Memories, now vapor, not worth regretting. Time is in the doing…something you pass through to get where you are.

So where are you? Have you a clue?

I’m sittin’ here talkin’ to you.

Right, you are.

       Hell, we’re okay!

Right, again. You ready to go home?

I thought I made that abundantly clear.

Is that what that was? Check please.

THE FINAL WHISPER

                                                           ' 06

Miriam wanted to know the truth, but there was no way to tell it. The pain alone would kill her dead.

Miriam suspects you are involved in an unsolved mystery.

Hiram knows you are not what you seem

And Rachel hung a sheet in her window, screaming -

HELP US!

We had ten calls to 911…
Overloaded,
System failure
And still no one listened

Without a sound
There was no
final whisper -
….help us.

Us?
Too late to ponder.
Something's wrong:

Bodies found
underground
Hands bound
Fates unwound

Before the committee
We were allowed
To expound
On exactly
what went
wrong

yet, no one
accepted
the offer

                                              slip away

THE PERFORMANCE

Jezuzfuckingkryst, ERIC!!! Do you have to let the universe know you reached orgasm? Are you trying to stop fucking traffic in Hong Kong?! Can you shriek your freaky bitch scream from a fuckin' higher pitch? Shattered glass is falling from high-rises on the streets below just because you got yourself ‘blowed’. You’d think you just ejaculated the fucking Empire State Building with that bellow, but instead it’s just your ‘little buddy’ havin a sneeze while blowing his nose. He’ll go back to bed right off, I’m sure….sleep soundly through the night. But the drama, the terror, you must have caused - the shock wave set off car alarms in Madrid. And set off a suzzanna alert in the South Pacific.
‘Sue who’? You mean like Amber...?
I mean...'Tsu - nami',
What’s the second name?
What ‘second name’? It’s a natural phenomena, not an Asian party-girl. How bloody blotto are you?
Plenty.
I know...
Pity. She sounds interesting. Can I just lie here and enjoy my after-glow?
No fartin’.
That’s a big part of the relief…
Well, if you haven’t noticed, there has been NO relief on this end of the engagement, and your awful air won’ help…
Aw, yes, THAT end. Let me see it again? Damn. Lovely, it is. Look at that! So round, so plump…
FIRM!
So firm and plump …and round.
Thank you.
Melonesque
That’s usually reserved for breasts, actually…
Oh…..
Not these breasts mind you, but fuck-off if they don’t meet your measure.
They seem to meet my measure just fine.
Speaking of ‘measure’…

Oh?… you mean buddyC’mon now, he’s about normal size, from what I’ve been reading…current studies show...

Oh? Curious about it are you? I can’t comment about size really, I have had only a small sample size.

What!!??

In terms of ‘volunteers’, silly. “Numeric Test Samples!", as in 'DATA', stupid...

You know what that means? - You should get out more often.

You should drop in more often…

Well you know, ‘the research project’, and those odd hours…

Don’t I, though.

Sometimes we just have to blow it off...

We could do that, too. Want more scotch?
We have more? Not very likely.
Damn. Right you are. Gonna have to be rum.
Rum is fun. Got ginger beer?
Does this place look like a bar.
Not one I would frequent.
Nor I. Besides I am pretty blotto, myself.

While I’m in the immediate area…are you ready for your Aria!?

You telling me “Intermission” is over already? OK!  In that case, Mi-Mi…Mi…I just might be.

Allow me to dim the lights for the second act.

The play must go on…

Oh, look, it’s a little stage. Curtains open...

And, you make your entrance...oh.
